My Teaching Philosophy
Content

In contrast with other single discipline classes, earth science is a wonderful combination of studies that give us insight into our planet. Geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy are the lenses through which we understand the history and inner workings of Earth.
Instructional Strategies
The study of the earth sciences is especially compatible with tactile experiences and the direct manipulation of objects while learning, which allows for a more interactive learning experience than traditional lecturing. Models, fossils, and simulations are exciting additions to a classroom curriculum.

Classroom Management

Equity in the Classroom
I accept all people of all races, religions, sexualities, gender identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and abilities. There are many small ways to make students feel more comfortable in the classroom.
-
Language is important in creating an inclusive environment; using non-gendered terms can help children of all gender identities and family structures feel welcome.
-
Asking students to take a few minutes to think about a question gives students that may need more time the opportunity to participate.
-
Allowing students to answer questions anonymously may also encourage introverted or anxious students to participate.

Collaboration

Open and constructive communication between teachers, students, parents, and faculty is necessary to ensure that students are receiving the best education possible. Feedback on lessons and classroom management is imperative for improving the students' experience as well as my own skills as an educator. Advice from more seasoned professionals is always welcomed and encouraged.
